Camie Jae Goldhammer watched “Sesame Street” when she was a girl in Seattle in the ‘80s. And she was watching when Big Bird looked down at Buffy Sainte-Marie and her son Dakota from his giant made-for-TV nest. The singer was sitting down, her long hair falling over her face, cradling a chubby boy in a yellow sleeper. Big Bird sounded more puzzled than usual. Whatcha doing, Buffy? “I’m feeding the baby,” she answered. “He’s drinking milk from my breast. … ” Buffy was no longer a regular on the show by the time Camie started watching, but the Native girl — a member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton tribe — paid special attention to her when reruns came on.
