Traditionally, tribal leaders are invited to attend the Governor’s State of the State Address as honored guests and this year was no different as Governor Heineman gave his address in the Legislative Chamber at the State Capitol Building.  On this chilly January morning, Governor Heineman spoke about job creation and reforming both the tax code and the child welfare system, all issues relevant in Indian country.  As sovereign entities, tribes and their leaders hold unique relationships with states.  Though specific interests may at times differ, the overall goal for both the tribes and the state of Nebraska can be summarized as follows: to improve the lives of our people.  This month marks the beginning of 2012 and a new year to work toward that goal.
