Students in NCIA’s Sovereign Native Youth Leadership Program along with classmates at Walthill High School work on their service project with architect Gary Bowen of Bahr Vermeer & Haecker to build an outdoor community base and shelter in Walthill. Program participants are working with University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) to learn how to write and implement grant proposals. Students will submit their grant proposal to NCIA for funding (through a Department of Health and Human Services grant designated for the youth leadership program). After assessing the needs of their community, students decided to build the shelter to serve as a gathering place for community members.
