The Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs stands in agreement with the statements of so many in the tribal community regarding the decision to retire the name and imagery of the Washington mascot.

Below is the Ponca Tribe’s statement about the Washington Logo decision.

After 87 seasons, the Washington Redskins now say the team name and logo are on the way out. Monday the team announced it would retire the Redskins name and team logo.  NFL officials say it’s unclear when a new name will be selected, but Native tribes say this decision is a step in the right direction.

Larry Wright Jr., Chairman of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, said Native tribes have been asking professional teams to change the names and mascots that mimic Native culture for decades.
